What It's For
Urea is the most concentrated dry nitrogen you can buy. It greens turf fast and cheaply, which also makes it the easiest fertilizer to overdo.
When to Use It
Best as a small spoon-feed in spring or fall when the grass is actively growing. Cool-season lawns get most of their urea in September–November.
Before You Spread It
- All of its nitrogen is quick-release unless the label says otherwise. Keep single applications at or under 0.5–0.75 lb N per 1,000 sq ft, skip it in summer heat on cool-season grass, and water it in.
- Urea left on the surface loses nitrogen to the air as ammonia. Water it in with about a quarter inch within a day, or apply right before rain.
- At 46% N, a few extra pounds is a big overdose. Calibrate your spreader before using it.
